Re: [Ausloco] Re: [NSW/ASR] 422 Class Locos

Good evening all,

Some more info on the 422's when they arrive in Adelaide they are to go
straight into Islington Workshops. As the story goes they are to eventually
going into Main Engineering where Great Northern is currently based; rumor
is that Great Northern is going to get some fresh sea air out at the Sealand
shipping terminal at Pelican point.
The plans to date for the 422's are 8 are going to be rebuilt and sent up
north for work on the Darwin line. What the rebuilding involves is not yet
known ( ie. Super Series, larger tanks, aircon etc). Does anyone have
details of each units condition? But is fairly well agreed that other units
are to be used besides these 8.
Also of interest is a boat from the States is due into Outer Harbour in the
next fortnight or so with approx 100 Yankee hoppers for work trains, again
for the Darwin line.

To answer the question about the BU's once the ALF's transition to parallel
operation the BU's cut out and are dragged as part of the load; i.e. the
BU's only operate in series for low speed haulage power. Ineffect the ALF
generator powers eight traction motors in series and six in parallel (normal
operation).
For those interested the theory behind this is by powering the extra two
motors on the BU it increases tractive effort by using the extra 36.5 t on
each end of the BU so it is like adding 36.5t to an ALF (correct me if I'm
wrong).
I believe that the reason the ALF's were single ended was to save cost's on
having to fit out two cabs per engine versus one on the CL's. To
redistribute weight the battery boxes were moved to the No.2 end to
compensate the loss of the cab. So the rear end of an ALF has the battery
boxes and toilet it.

Cheers
