RE: [Ausloco] Re: [NSW/ASR] 422 Class Locos
Maybe I'm just picking up on a 'typo' but the 'AL' class were Built as double enders and Rebuilt as single enders when converted to ALF. AFAIK, the ALF conversion was specifically targetted at using the 'BU' boosters, as part of the AL > ALF conversion entailed using the excess output of the generator (AR10-D14) to supply the BU traction motors.
To simplify cabling between ALF and BU, all traction motor power cabling is routed out the back of the ALF, so single-ended operation of the ALF is mandatory. Hence, the second cab became superfluorous - perhaps Justin can tell us what is now installed in the space that used to be the second cab.
And to pick up on an earlier message: the booster unit takes whatever extra power (amperage) from the generator that the ALF traction motors cannot make use of, and converts this to extra tractive effort. In an ALF / BU / ALF lash-up, each ALF is supplying its relative half of the BU. If one ALF fails, this doesn't cripple the whole consist, it simply means that the remaining ALF + 1/2BU has an additional ALF + 1/2BU dead weight to drag around.

Dave,
Your comment that the AL's were built as 'single enders' for 'aesthetic'
reasons !!
God forbid, I hope this is not a personal view !!
>From an aesthetic's point of view the AL's were not exactly pretty engines,
in the first place.
Rebuilding to ALF's wasn't exactly a design coup !!
I'd suspect that the rebuild was more in keeping with AN's policy, in regard
to Motive Power, at the time.
It may have, also been associated with the ill-fated ALF+BU+ALF Combo's !!
But for 'aeshetics' ??
I don't think so !!
