RE: [Ausloco] Orange derailment
Updating yesterday afternoon's posting, 8149 has done its off-road
impression of a ballast plough less than 100 metres north of the East
Fork signal box. This is close to where the Parkes and Dubbo legs of
the triangle converge, and I suspect may be catchpoint-protected (Gary
Marshall: can you confirm this?). Traffic is still able to run through
on the Dubbo line.
I popped down trackside on my way home from work last night (1815), and
saw 8149 still in the dirt, and a container behind it, with the bagged
flour being transferred to a road truck. About a dozen track crew /
investigators in their XP2001 vests were standing in a group looking on.
8035 stood under the Orange station yard shed, along with two loaded 60'
container flats. How shameful - a Clyde-GM requiring assistance from an
ALCo!
A blast of a horn took me trackside again later in the evening: in time
to see 8205 / 48160 / 8181 / 8160 roll in at 2013 with 38x NGPF/Y
hoppers, as Dubbo-bound train 9821 (I got it right this time!). A 4-5
minute wait in the platform for a train order, and it was on its way.
A quick check on 8149 at 2020 showed the rerailment had been abandoned
for the night; it was still alone at 0610 this morning. From the news
last night, it looks like they are trying to rerail it with jacks. I
can't see why cranes aren't used: access doesn't look too difficult, and
the high-voltage Cadia lines are reasonably clear of the tracks.
Hopefully an opportunity will arise this morning to again pop by and
check on progress.
Peter
