you would probably know this anyway, but to clear up any confusion for
those who don't, the KAs were simply RAs converted to standard gauge -
they were smaller (at least they looked that way) than the Ks, but
looked the same as the Rs. Three were converted, though one reverted to
narrow gauge fairly early on. KA211 and KA212 were still around
Kalgoorlie during my first stint there (Dec 86-Feb 87); on my return
(early 88-mid 89), both had gone. Visiting Perth for a week in December
88, I sighted KA212 shunting Forrestfield yard on several occasions, and
KA211 was stored semi-stripped in the yard at Midland Workshops.

R1902 is the only preserved R Class although RA1918 (converted from a
KA) is at the ARHS Museum, Bassendean dumped out the back in a rather
derelict state.
