I used to often watch one of the evening Traralgon trains in the mid
80's: it would arrive FS platform 8 (10? - one of the platforms near the
river) as L electric loco with an N set around 1715; then set back to
near the workshops, run around and set back to the platform around 1740.
The move to fixed sets in the early 80's certainly changed the way
things were done - much more efficient.  Just like the move away from a
van always at the rear of a consist.  Sorry I'm rusty on the exact
details: my folder with copious quantities of notes and sightings is
buried in one of my many boxes of "junk" at home.
