Victorian G and N class were delivered with air cons; A and P received
them when being rebuilt from B and T classes. C, H and X classes were
progressively fitted from about 1986-87, and some Ts and Ys have been
equipped in the last couple of years. As and Ps have the air con
mounted beneath the cab floor; Cs and Gs fitted in the cab roof; the H,
T and X units are on the roof of the long hood, immediately behind the
cab. The Ys have a smaller unit about 1 - 1.5 metres behind the cab,
also on the hood roof.
AN received BL, DL, EL and AN classes with units fitted; CLs, 600s,
700s, NJs and some 830s were fitted in the 80's (perhaps even late 70s).
The original CL type apparently were very unreliable / ineffective or
both. I don't know about the ALs (never noticed when I was in
Kalgoorlie), but would have thought they'd have needed something for all
of their Nullarbor trips. Obviously the ALF, CLF and CLP rebuilds were
fitted.
Westrail were fitting their D, DA and L class units from about late
1986; theirs consisted of a box about 30cm square and 50cm long, mounted
on top of the battery box on the footplate beside the short hood. Newer
units are fitted.
Newer QR units were fitted during construction; many older units were
being fitted while I was up there in the early 90's: the short hood was
rebuilt lower and shorter, and a removable section added to the front -
most evident on the 1700s and 1720s, which had previously been
nose-less. The units are identical to those fitted to the BHP Whyalla
rebuilds.

I don't know about reliability but Sigma is by far the most popular
brand, it is made in Australia.
80,81,82,90 in NSW fitted from new (not sure about 85 and 86).
Some 48s and a couple of 422s have been retrofitted.

Chris.

Hi All
I have a few questions regarding locomotive air conditioning systems.
Are all lead unit locomotives equiped with aircon?
Is it reliable or does it fail regularly?
What is the most common faults with a/c units and are they able to be
corrected by train crews?
Are older locomotives fitted with aircon and is it reliable? Was it
built
in new or retro fitted?
Can anyone tell me if there is a preferred brand of a/c unit?
The reason I ask is that we are trying to get Tranz Rail to fit a/c to
our
ageing loco fleet. We are told by the powers that be that almost 90% of
loco bookings or bad orders are a/c related (sounded abit far fetched to
me
but who knows). We are also told that a reliable a/c unit has never
been
produced for a locomotive which I find hard to beleive.
I suspect they are just using this as an excuse to avoiding some capital
expenditure.
Any help on this matter would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
