80 class withdrawals

Aus loco discussion mailing list

I regret to inform you that the withdrawal of Freightcorp's 80 class members
has begun.
8013 was withdrawn tues 14/3.
8040 is to be withdrawn tomorrow thurs 16/3.
During the next week or so 8004, 8026, 8015, 8045, 8031 are scheduled for
withdrawal.
Another 5 units are to go shortly after.
Meanwhile 8046 is to be sent to Werris Creek as an active unit and Werris
Creek based 8003, 8027 and 8050 are scheduled for withdrawal.
It is understood that the units taken out of 'general' service are to be
stored at Lithgow, making that facility quite crowded.
Also slated for withdrawal in the not-too-distant future are 5 mark 2 48
class units but details are unknown at this stage.
On a positive note, the mark 2 versions of PL1 &2 are expected to be
released for testing within the next fortnight.
Apparently there will be minor changes in the appearance of these 2 in
regards to marker lights and other subtle differences.
I have been told that the other 2 units,PL3 & 4 have been sighted and their
appearance seems to differ from the first 2 in the short nose area.
More information as it comes to hand.
Meanwhile, get your shots of the 80s before the become extinct!
Sad regards
Ivar Sorrasson
