Parkes, 15/3
Aus loco discussion mailing list
Had the unfortunate task of having to go to Peak Hill via Parkes this
morning (how I hate an opportunity to visit Parkes!). 42203 and 42220
were in Orange yard, on the Dubbo end of the Broken Hill cars at 0750.
On my return, I crossed this train at Manildra at 1327.
Manildra yard at 0815 held 7340, MM01 and two or three 48's on hoppers
(I think these may have been 4899 / 4891 / 48112, sighted at Parkes
depot at 1240). Some idiot who always has his binoculars under his
driver's seat had left them in his suitcase on return from Alice
Springs, which made it impossible to pick the numbers.
Parkes station at 0850 held NR54 / NR32 (elephants) / flat wagon /
5-pack / 19 new trailers on the Western Sprinter, alongside NR56 / NR57
(back to back) on a dozen or so flat wagons containing Heggies
Concentrate containers - isn't this a FreightCorp job? Would this be
the first time the two SeaTrain blue units have paired up? The Sprinter
departed west as I arrived, followed about a minute later by the
concentrate train. Someone was photographing at the east end of Goobang
Yard, and it also looked like another fan or two were getting back into
cars adjacent to the signal box. Unfortunately I was pushed for time,
and couldn't grab a photo (too much back-lighting, too, I think). I was
already having to do some "low flying" to make my appointment as it was.
Parkes depot at 0850 held 48122 / 48107 / 48153 (paint falling off);
4514; 442s3, 48s33, 48s36 / 48s35 in the yard, and 442s6, 48s32, 48s37
and 442s2 in the roundhouse. 48s36 must have come across from Broken
Hill, as it hasn't been there on my previous visits - it's still in the
old colours, and just numbered "36". 48s30 and 48s31 must have been out
on a Cobar run (or returned to the Hill?)
48s37, which has been a regular runner, must have been receiving a
service.
Bacvk at the Depot at 1240 saw 48112 / 4891 / 4899 moving around the
fuel bay; 48122 / 48107 / 48153 moving out, and everything else as was.
48150 and 4890 were both in the Parkes yard, over near the grain wagons.
