Alice Springs, 4-5/3

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Hi all,

last chance for a photo of a train into Alice yesterday afternoon. I
was out with some people until 1815, and was due to go out again with
others at 1900. I rang the NR terminal to enquire about 6AL7N arrival,
and was told it was 25' away - beauty!

Off trackside to find a spot: too shady at the gap, and the curve of the
track was the wrong way.

Off to check a couple more sites: none were really what I was after.
Stupid mistake 1: not checking out a good spot weeks ago.

Back out through the gap, and there it was, already upon me. Into place
for a rough shot, but too late: it was passing. Stupid mistake 2: I was
on the opposite side of the track to the highway, and had to wait for
the entire train to pass.

Back on the highway, stuck behind a slow road train. Fortunately the
steel-highway train was crawling also, so back in front easily, and
managed three shots! The very last train I'll see arriving here, and
finally I manage a shot after heaps of panic!

NR18 / NR82 (elephants) / flat wagon / 5x 5-well sets (double stacked
except 2 wells) / 6 flats / 5-pack / 3-pack / 11 flats / 5-pack / 4
flats / 2-pack / 2 flats / 9 Mereenie tanks = 73 wagons, arrived 1850.
About a dozen or more empty 20' slots.

The usual early rise on Sunday: 1LA6N was NR18 / NR82 (back to back now)
/ flat wagon / 12 Mereenie tanks / 3x 5-well sets double stacked / 2 x
5-wells single stacked (first well was doubled) / 5-pack with 4th
platform double-stacked / 2 flats / 5-pack with centre well / 3-pack / 2
flats / 2-pack / 3-pack / flat / 2-pack / 10 flats / 5-pack / 2 flats /
5-pack / motorail = 86 wagons, departed spot on 0430 as usual, and took
the normal ten minutes to clear the yard.

NR100 waits in the yard for Tuesday morning's 3LA6N departure, and Dream
Land (DL)39 dreams on.

That's it for me from Alice; catch you all again on Tuesday from Orange!

If at first you don't succeed, try again. Then give up - no need to be
a fool about it.

Regards,

Peter Donaghy
