[Ausloco] FNQ Hoppers (Charlie's Trousers Sightings)
The hoppers with the "Plastic Lids" on them are used for concentrate
transport from the growing number of mines along the Great Northern.
Zinc, Lead and Copper concentrates are transported from a number of mines to
Townsville - Copper, Zinc, and Lead for export, and Zinc to the new Sun
Metals Zinc Smelter at Townsville. Thalanga Copper concentrates is
transported in trains usually with a single 2800 and hoppers without covers,
whilst most of the mines further west use the covered hoppers. There are
mines at Cannington (BHP Silver Lead Zinc), Selwyn (Copper), Osborne
(Copper - load at Phosphate Hill), Ernest Henry (Copper), Mt Isa (Cu, Ag,
Pb, Zn), Eloise (Cu), Thalanga (Cu) and probably one or two I've missed.
Also the new fertilizer plant at Phosphate Hill is now in operation, and I
think the ex coal hoppers are for that, plus they also rail Sulphuric Acid
to there from Townsville and Mt Isa.
The old Great Northern - all 600 plus miles of it is a busy bit of railway
these days after its second major upgrade.
Thanks for the news from FNQ - its great to see whats happening elsewhere
away from the big smoke,
