Re: RE:[Ausloco] SAR 500 class multiple unit ?

Hi Ben

With all due respect but I believe you are getting confused with the
900 class control stand, which I have only otherwise seen on the QR
1200 class, albeit turned the other way around. The 500's had a
similar throttle to the 800's activating an air valve with an
electrically powered load governor. The two sides were connected by
mechanical levers under the floor of the cab which made it a fairly
simple arrangement.

In common with 900's and 800's there were virtually 3 engine speeds,
idle mid speed and max, while in the 500's, the load governor took
care of the excitation levels to the generator. I did not have a great
deal to do with 800's during my time in either Islington or Mile End
apart from a couple of services except that they built the loco around
the engine, and the commutators particularly of the auxiliary
generators were literally stuffed! An that was 1974/75!

Cheers

Trevor

Tasmania with the 2 rebuilt ZB's (ZB9 - 2100 and ZB6 - 2101 being
rebuilt and fitted with an 8 notch desk top controler instead of the
old 10 notch EE control.
