Last night (between 9 and 10 p.m.) was quite an interesting time to be
around Canterbury, with late night freight action aplenty. At around 9.10
p.m., 8026/8047 came by with a down trip working, the two Alco's echoing
through the cutting under the rays of the full moon. 8026 looks in
desperate need of a repaint, with white numbers faded badly and uneven
blue paint. I was down at the Cook's River when a lengthy coal train went
by, more audible by the squealing protest of the wheels than the
locomotives. I came back to the line by 9.50 p.m. when a minute or so
later, 4861/4851 wheezed by on the down as light engines. The sound of
the 48/830 class is THE classic Alco exhaust beat for mine. Hope this
interests
Scott
