EE Model Numbers

EE Model Numbers

Does anyone know the origins and significance of the model numbers applied to the various EE Australia locomotives?  And were they ever used by EE Australia itself?

I've recently had some discussion with John Cleverdon on this subject.  The origin of the model numbers used in his LocoPage is the November, 1974 issue of Railway Transportation, in the Annual Motive Power Survey.  In that RT survey, all of the EE model numbers are shown in brackets, and the preamble to the tabular data states: "Model refers to the manufacturer's specification reference where issued, although those appearing in brackets have not been allocated
by the manufacturer."

This suggests that the model numbers were assigned by RT, or someone else other than EE on a post facto basis.  John had also come across an earlier set of model numbers, origin unknown, although these covered only some of the EE Australia models.

Both John and I had come to pretty much the same conclusions about "decoding" of the EE model numbers.  See
http://www.railpage.org.au/loco/ee.html for full details.

Any help will be most welcome.

Cheers,
