Re: 422 Class farewell
Aus loco discussion mailing list
I followed the train from Queanbeyan to Moss Vale, and apart from my
first shot in the Molonglo Gorge which is absolutely spectacular, the
trip turned into a videoing disaster.
I missed the shot at Bungendore because I expected the train to be
refuged there to allow the down Explorer to pass but it didn't.
I kicked the tripod during a panning shot between Bungendore and
Tarago and ruined the shot.
At Tarago I set up on the hill at the end of the grade out of the
station expecting the train to blast up there but instead of setting
back to the station after leaving the loop to pick up the second
person as every other train has done at this location that I have
observed, it instead crawled up the grade and waited for the second
person to walk the length of the train and board the engine.
At Joppa Junction the sun angle was all wrong and again the train just
crawled through without the typical 422 exhaust soundtrack.
At Goulburn they stuck an 81 on the front.
At Wingello instead of blasting up the grade through the station it
crawled through at walking pace.
What should have been a beautiful late afternoon glint shot near
Exeter was destroyed by a shadow from the only small cloud in the sky
that left the train in darkness and all the surroundings brightly lit.
At the time the train was ready to leave Moss Vale after picking up
extra loading I had a great sunset silhouette shot set up at Burradoo
but a late running passenger service delayed the departure until it
was too dark.
Oh well, you win some, you loose some (except for the Molonglo Gorge
shot).
Bevan Wall.
