Re: Cobar ore train
Aus loco discussion mailing list
>From my observation it seems that this particular ore train is a
combined NR/Silverton operation. The train of empties from Newcastle
(2NE1) arrived at Narromine on Monday night behind the two NRs. From
there the four Silverton 48s worked the train out to Cobar (going
through Nygan around 08.00 Tuesday morning), arriving back at
Narromine around 11.00 on Wednesday. Late Monday afternoon two of the
Siverton 48s were shutdown in Narromine yard so the other two must
have run out LE from Parkes early on Monday evening. The two NRs were
left shut down in Narromine yard (where there is no fencing or
lighting) from Monday night to Wednesday morning (a waste of expensive
motive power?). It occurred to me at the time that if that was done in
Sydney they would be absolutely covered in graffiti!
I can't be sure, but I think the crews driving the NRs are Silverton
crews or NR crews on loan to Siverton (on Tuesday evening I phoned the
Silverton office in Parkes to discuss the videoing of Wednesday's run
back to Newcastle and the person I spoke to was the driver of the NRs)
- perhaps someone can explain the crewing arrangement.
Depending on the time of day the train runs it is an extremely
photogenic operation - the quad Silverton 48s crossing the Bogan River
at Nygan in early morning sun (beware of the mossies - I got eaten
alive by the biggest ones I've ever seen!) and the two NRs in
different liveries rounding the huge curve in to Merrygoen in late
afternoon sun are just two examples of the many photo opportunities
available. I also recorded some great scenes of the train passing the
recent derailment sight near Nygan - the wreckage from this is strewn
all around the side of the line because the ground is still to boggy
to allow recovery of the wagons and bogies.

ps. Derek, Ross took some excellent photos - I will post a selection
to you next week.
