RE: Hume Log train

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Hi Darin:

a) Hume is a suburb of Canberra, not a railway siding. All loading is done with the train standing on the 'main' line.

b) According to an old NSWGR Curve & Gradient book, the loading place is a shade under 5 miles (8 km) from Queanbeyan, just at the start of the 1 in 40 climb to Tuggernong siding. The train does not go any further south than this.
The train stops on the grade and uses gravity to move the rake as only 4 to 5 wagons can fit the loading area at a time. When I last looked, they were only using one tractor to load so that each wagon took almost 25 minutes to load (6 trips of the loader, minimum) - they only allowed for 15 mins. for each wagon when the timetable was worked out.

c) The train runs out to Hume from Queanbeyan, usually with a loco at each end so that the loaded rake can be hauled, rather than propelled, back to Queanbeyan yard, where the locos are reunited at the (now) front of the train. Usual motive power is G/X with green G522 and V/Line X45 being the most recent units. The wagon count is around the 24 - 25 mark which makes the run-around of the locos at Queanbeyan a tad complex.

d) Destination is Port Kembla: there are a couple of dead-end sidings that enter the log storage area which is adjacent to the log loading wharf. Chris Stratton could give a more accurate description of where this is.

e) The whole process has three transhipments:
Truck from plantation to Hume; train from Hume to Port Kembla storage area; truck from storage area to ship (much less than 1 km). FV must have pitched its price low to get the business.

Trust this helps:

GDay All,

Could someone please elaborate on where Hume is (Can't find it on a map)?
I believe it is some distance down the old Cooma line out of Queanbeyan.
However the only loop I know of is at Royalla - so does this train reverse
back to Queanbeyan?

What is the destination for these logs? How many wagons are on this train?

cheers
