Hi all,
Yesterday in Adelaide was quite eventfull.
It started with the arrival of X45 behind G532/G531 on 7MA4 Toll.
The locos were rostered to work 1AM4 Toll that night with the X trailing
again but all didn't go well. First of all X45 had extremely low cooling
water and it wouldn't of made it back. It also had one traction motor cut
out. But then G532 wouldn't start at all. So the loco's off 6MA4 Toll
(G530/G538/G533)into Adelaide on Sat 26/2 ended up working the train, while
the other three went to the Clyde MPC. They managed to start G532 and topped
up the cooling water on X45 but they found that another traction motor was
cut out so it was left with only four motors. The three ended up working
6PM9 SCT back to Melbourne early Monday morning.
6PM9 SCT heading to Adelaide from Perth also struck problems. First of all
ALF22 failed at Mt.Christie but then got going again. But near Nantawarra
ALF25 failed and the train could do no more than 30km/h.
Things still didn't get any better. Near Murray Bridge DL40 which was second
unit behind NR83 on 7WP2 failed. The train stopped at Murray Bridge and got
DL40 going again. Then the fun began again.
About 2215 when nearing Unley Park, 6PM6 headed by NR79/NR17/DL38 stalled
due to NR17 failing. The train was stopped across the busy Cross Rds level
crossing. NR17 would idle but no power could be put down to the rails. So
NR79 and DL38 towed NR17 and the 2500tonne train to Belair. It sounded great
crawling at 10km/h with both locos screaming.
While this was happening 7WP2 which was crossing 6PM6 at Belair stopped
before the loop so NR83 could run into the loop and then DL40 run along the
main. NR83 then backed onto its train and hauled it into the loop and then
DL40 ran in behind after clearing the points again. On 6PM6's arrival at
Belair, the engines cut off their train and attached DL40 sitting in the
loop. They then recoupled to their train and left Belair at 2325 as
NR79/NR17(dead)/DL38/DL40. The two DL's sounding magic as they crawled their
way very slowly around Fosters Corner and on their way to Melbourne.
This ended a very exiting day of problems.
Cheers, Justin Cheary
