So they ran as a six car job. Would this have been the first six car running
on the south?
I have seen several four car services but never two sets combined.

My 'roving reporter' has uncovered further information from a third source -
a passenger! Apparently the early morning Xploder lived up to its name by
the rear car (I think that was 2504) expiring at Queanbeyan. A bus was
hastily arranged but passengers had to instruct the driver how to drive to
Goulburn via Bungendore and Tarago. They were not amused!
Xploded set apparently limped back to Canberra for assessment / repairs
propelled by the other power car (which would have been 2525).

At about 7:50 in the morning the set was being moved into the platform( I
think). Later in the afternoon ( 16:30) the set was coupled to the
afternoon set for departure at 5:20.
