(I think I came into this debate a bit late, but i'll put my opinions in
anyway)

In the past 5 or so years Tasrail has only tried MUing the two Ys once or
twice, and it didn't work (possibly more to do with the crew not wanting it
to work). They are usually stationed at opposite ends of the state.

At the moment there seems to be little need to MU Z/ZA and ZB/ZC locos.
Tasrail seem to make up sets of two, three or four locos and then the sets
stay together on these rosters for some weeks. (ie two sets of four ZBs ran
43/44 coal train for what seemed like months, alternating running one day
and servicing/short trips the other day.  It was explained to me once,
something about different brake valves.
