Re: Boosters/Slugs (Was RE: BU1)

A further thought on this subject...Normally I think that a slug would be
through-wired with an MU cable and jumpers and the various air pipes
(including in the EE EP case the ESCP air throttle pipe) so that it can be
sandwiched in a loco consist. If the slug has on-board reversers, these
could be controlled locally from the appropriate MU wires (and if air
operated, actuated using air supplied from the "mother" loco via the MR
pipe.) On-board reversers would reduce the number of heavy current cables
needed to link the slug to its mother loco. Also, dynamic brakes, if
fitted, could be controlled from the appropriate MU wires, maybe with an
exciter hung on to one of the TM blowers (electric loco style) or as a
separate small MG set.

So there can be some elements of an MU control system used in a slug, but
obviously not that related to diesel engine speed control, which is where
the major differences between different MU systems occur.

(OK, dynamic brake controls can vary quite a bit as well. AFAIK, Alcos, GMs
& GEs mostly use potential wire control, whereas some early EE UK systems
used an increase/decrease kind of control with the load regulator rheostat
then responding accordingly. I haven't a clue what kind of dynamic brake
control was fitted to the Aussie EEs so equipped, though.)

just have traction motors which are supplied from the master loco.
