John,
I would imagine that the Paxman prime movers are nearing their 15
year half-life (given that 30 years is about the best you can get out
machinery before a 'bottom-up' refit is needed). To diverge slightly ,
the R.A.N. is retiring its Perth class DDG's after 35 years service for
the same reasons, because the hull and machinery is literally worn out.
The prime moverrs are showing their age, as evidenced by the heavy oil
streaking on the bodysides that I see when they come thru Sydenham
station (and the everpresent rags strewn across the dashboard of the
XP's). I have been told that Paxman are also providing the replacement
prime movers (this was also announced in the initial request for tender
(RFT) that was in the SMH some months ago for the re-engining process). I
hope this is a bit enlightening.
