Re: Fw: [nzrailways] NZGR Class J steam locomotives
Aus loco discussion mailing list
Dear John & Derek
The book is " Hudson Power" by Robert Carlisle and Bill Abbott, published by
ARHS in 1985.
The photo mentioned is on page 45 and shows R742 & R767 alongside 2 NZR Ja class
locos which are not identified., on the Glasgow Docks, not on a ship.
R 742 was shipped on Rhexenor, arriving in Melb on 14/7/1952 whilst R767 arrived
on Stentor on 22/7/1952.
It would not be logical to assume that the 2 NZR locos in question were on those
same ships as, even though they are photographed together, the 2 R's came on
different ships.
Other ships shown as arriving in Melb with other R's in 1952 are
Ixion - 14/1/52
Garvel Park - 5/2/52
Stentor - 5/2/52
Jason - 11/2/52
Charlbury - 14/2/52
Helenus - 28/2/52
Graigur - 18/3/52
Javanes Prince - 7/4/52
Hector 21/4/52
Adelaide Star - 14/5/52
Delane - 21/5/52
Lyle Park - 2/6/52
Jason - 15/12/52
Hector - 19/2/53
The book says that only 2 locomotives were usually sent on each ship but there
were instances of up to 4 locos, or 4 engine units only.
The shipping line used was the Blue Funnel Line but the 20 different vessels
came from Alfred Holt Lines,Shaw Savill and Albion, Blue Star, Drake Shipping
Company, Denholm Line, Alexander Shipping Company, Graig Shipping Company and
the Lamport & Holt Line
Derek, I hope this helps and if you need any further info, do not hesitate to
ask. The book says very little else but does have shipping details for 1951
Regards
Peter Enlund
