North Coast NSW Pick Up Goods
Aus loco discussion mailing list
Folks,
I am interested in starting a discussion on locomotive usage for the NSW
North Coast Pick up Goods train. Time period can be either steam era or Alco
era such as the 48 class on the all stations shunting trip sometimes called
the "Local Pickup Goods".
I wonder if the loco that hauled the train north from Broadmeadow yard in
the 1950's or 1960's or similar time period was the same loco that hauled
the train into Grafton or Casino? Or was the loco changed every time it got
to a town with a sizable loco depot such as Taree?
Was one train timetabled all the way north from Broadmeadon or even Enfield?
Or did the timetable have several of these pick up Goods listed so that one
train was tabled from eg Broadmeadow to Taree where it reformed into a new
train with a new number before it continued on its way north?
Another aspect is the possible locos. I suggest standard Goods and / or 59
class for the later steam era with the 48 class for the diesel era. Would
the mainline 40 / 43 / 44 / 45 have been used on the local pick up goods?
I assume the 73 class as well as the X100 and X200 shunting locos only
worked the major yards and branches such as the Taree branch down to the
dairy factory. I assume the 73 class did not haul trains along the mainline
although the similar QR DH did haul trains along some lengthy branchlines.
Cheers
Peter
