Looking Back Round Trip August 1971

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Having a bit of time on my hands, I planned a short trip to Sydney via Adelaide ( and ended up in Brisbane!).

Friday August 6 1971
2258 Ballarat-Adelaide on No69 Overland S311 S301 17 vehicles Dep 2337.

Saturday August 7 1971
C/O Serviceton to 948 & 957 Arrived in Adelaide at 1040 100' late, definitely the Overdue!.According to the driver at Murray Bridge 701 had failed on a freight in front.
The next stage was to catch the 1130 Bluebird to Peterborough to connect with the IP but due to a derailment out west the IP was at least 18 hours late. After a day in cold wet Adelaide doing the suburbans and trams caught the 1835 to Peterborough with 105 (Snipe) & 255 ( Curlew) arriving at 2308.

Sunday August 8 1971

Woke to a white frost and strong south wind, Peterborough is not the most attractive place for seeking shelter from the elements. The IP finally arrived behind 602 at 1145 and departed at 1200, consist HM,ARJ,ARL,ARM,ARL,ARJ,AFC,DF,CDF,BRJ,BRJ,ER,HGM
Arrived Broken Hill 1542 C/O 4483 & 4488 and departed at 1630 (EST). Having first travelled on the Broken Hill-Parkes line a year prior, I noted the rough riding was worse on this trip.

Monday August 9 1971
Arrived Lithgow 0816 c/o 4603 & 4601 dep 0830. Noted 5476 & 5490 shunting. Arrived Central 1059.4012 was the passenger shunter!
Dep Central 1250 on the Express behind 4001 (Bonus) arrived Newcastle at 1545 noted 5905,5914 5919,6002 & 6018 en route.

Tuesday August 10 1971
Unfortunately a coal strike mean traffic was way down. A trip to Broadmeadow revealed 6022,6009,6039,6026,6008,6002,6018,6042,5910 & 5919. 6029 & 6037 were receiving workshops attention.
4001 was again on the 1300 Express to Sydney.
Port Waratah coughed up 5451,5483,5132,1904,5475,3090,5482,5268,5412,5112,5212,
5262,5273,5278,1923,3142,5248,5178,5343,,5353,5263,5489,
5189 & 5369. Most of these were silent owing to the strike.

Wednesday August 11 1971
No end to the strike so I booked a return ticket to South Brisbane to ride the loco hauled Suburbans which always held a fascination for me.
Only 2 steam hauled freights noted, 6042 & 6018 on 665 and 6026 on another ex Port Waratah. 5069 arrived L E from Sydney ex Workshops.
2057 Broadmeadow-South Brisbane 4426 (off Taree) & 4435.Scored a Twinette in an NAM to myself!

Thursday August 12 1971
Arrived ontime at 1000. Rode behind 1489,1280,1471 & 1528.

Friday August 13 1971
More Suburban travel behind 1769,1453,1774,1493,2109,& 1482.
1640 South Brisbane- Central Brisbane Limited 4426.

Saturday August 14 1971
added 4630 at Gosford for the run up the hill. Arrived 19' late at 0852.
I visited a friend in Glenbrook for the day and my notes say the return trip on a 6 car 'U Boat' between Penrith and Paramatta was done at 'breakneck speed'- those U Boats could really travel!
2000 Sthn Aurora Central-Melbourne 42220 & 42202 Departed 9' late owing to the fact that the Brisbane Limited did not depart until 1935 behind 4462 & 4453 because of the need to replace the MHO which had a brake defect.

Sunday August 15 1971
C/O Albury to S315 arr Sp St 0900.
After a day in Melbourne I caught the Overland to Ballarat behind S302 & X41 & 14 Cars Dep 2040 arr 2237.
