Ararat smash victim G517 was another with stencilled numbers, as was X41
(42?), if I remember correctly. Quite a lot of units, including at
least one H and several Ts, were also affected. Some Bs also ran their
final years with one or both plates "painted on", as did some Ys. No Ns
seem to be affected. This problem only seemed to arise in the mid-late
80s, when withdrawals "en masse" began.

In regard to G533, before it was repainted green, it sported a crude
stenciled painted number on the side of the unit. This 'stencil-painted
numberplate' (for the want of a better term), did not have a white
painted
outline. Other units with 'stencil-painted numberplates' include X38,
S301,
S306, S307, S310. I am sure that there are/were others.
I believe that green X40 is also missing its numberplates - this unit
had
the stencil-painted version when it was still in V/Line colours.
