They are operated both by The Met and by private bus contractors. All regular bus services have route numbers. The government has begun contracting out the remaining Met bus routes to private companies. - V/Line country services in the suburban area (Met tickets apply): - Melton to Sunshine - Sunbury to St Albans - Cranbourne to Dandenong - Craigieburn to Broadmeadows - Special Services: - Nightrider bus service. Additional services (4:30am, 5:30am, 6:30am) run on the Broadmeadows, Dandenong and Eltham routes.) Buses stop at 12-18 locations on each route, and passengers can alight at any normal bus or tram stop. Met tickets do not apply to this service. All buses are equipped with mobile phones, to enable passengers to phone ahead for people to meet them, or for a taxi home. - Special events: - annual Royal Melbourne Show; special trains to Showgrounds - Race meetings; special trains to most racetracks - Football & Cricket matches; extra services to most grounds - Moomba (annual festival); extra evening services from the city on selected rail lines - other public events, eg sport, concerts; extra services - express peak services on most rail routes - Skybus and Airport shuttle services (Met tickets not valid) - Telebus: 4 bus routes in the Lilydale/Ringwood area that will divert on request to pick up passengers. - Light Rail: tram routes 96 and 109/111 run partly on reserved tracks (both former heavy rail lines.) This enables the articulated trams on these routes to run at high speed on those sections, close to that of heavy rail services. - Double decker prototype train running on Ringwood line. (Government cuts have prevented further such trains) - Historic Transit: - most tram services on routes 8, 10-12, 15/16 (and more on weekdays) run by W-class trams, which were built 1930s-50s. City Tram Loop (to open 1994) will run with specially painted W-class trams - Puffing Billy narrow gauge steam trains (see Directions to Places of Interest) - Broad gauge steam trains are occasionally run by the Australian Historical Railway Society, usually from Melbourne to country destinations - the Railway Museum, North Williamstown - one modified former Sydney tram is used for track maintenance SERVICE LEVELS - Rail: Monday-Saturday: 5am to midnight Sunday: 8am to 11pm Holidays: Most holidays run Saturday service, with Good Friday and Christmas Day running Sunday service Frequencies (in minutes) and other information: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LINE OR| KM| |No. |Time | Peak|Daytime |Sat. |Even. | | MAJOR | from|Fare|Stations|Stop/ | time|off-peak|day |(Mon- |Sun.| STATION|Flinders|Zone\ |Expr | freq|freq. |freq.|Sat) |freq| --------\--------\----\------/------/------+-------/------+------+----+ Alamein 14.9 1 13 27/23 15-25 15# 20-40# 60# 40# Belgrave 41.3 1-3 27 67/58 10-15 30 40 34/26# 40# Broadmeadows 18.1 1-2 15 33/29 8-10 20 20 30 40 Burnley* 4.1 1 3 9/8 7/8 9/11 24/36 3/37 Camberwell 9.0 1 7 16/12 3-5 15 20 30 40 Caulfield* 10.6 1 7 17/13 3-5 9/11 9/11 15/15 20/20 Clifton Hill* 5.4 1 6 11/8 4-6 4/16 4/16 15 13/27 Dandenong 30.0 1-3 20 46/37 7-10 20 20 30 40 Eltham 26.2 1-2 20 46/39 12-20 20 20 30 40 Epping 21.2 1-2 20 39/- 10-15 20 20 30 40 Footscray 6.4 1 4 13/12 3-7 9/11 9/11 12/18 19/21 Frankston 42.7 1-3 26 62/52 5-10 20 20 30 40 Glen Waverley 20.9 1-2 15 36/42 8-10 15 20 30 40 Hurstbridge 36.7 1-2 23 65/54 20 40 40 60 40 Lilydale 37.8 1-3 23 58/52 8-10 30 40 26/34# 40# Pakenham 56.9 1-3 27 72/63 17-22 40# 40# 60# None+ Ringwood 24.5 1-3 19 41/33 4-5 15 20 30 40 Sandringham 17.9 1-2 13 27/- 10 15 20 20 40 St Albans 19.0 1-2 11 29/- 11-19 20 20 30 40 Stony Point# 73.4 1-3 35 98/- - 75-120#75-120#180# 120# Upfield 20.1 1-2 15 35/- 20 20 20 None+ None+ Werribee 32.9 1-2 15 47/44 13-18 20 20 30 40 Williamstown 15.5 1 11 28/- 13-16 20# 20# 30# 40# ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * About every second train running between here and the city stops at minor (ie not highlighted) stations. [See map below] Generally all trains stop at all stations on Sundays. Services between the city and Footscray, Caulfield, Clifton Hill, Burnley, Ringwood and Camberwell are provided by trains from the two or more lines that branch from these stations. [See map below] Frequencies listed as, for example, Caulfield 9/11 indicates that two lines pass through this point at 20 minute intervals. In this example, trains to the city come from Frankston, then 9 minutes later from Dandenong, then 11 minutes later another from Frankston. + Service on Upfield line on Sundays and evenings is provided by the adjacent 19 tram and co-ordinated bus service. Service on Pakenham line on Sundays is provided by two V/Line country trains each way. Met tickets are valid on this section. # Passengers are required to change trains (co-ordinated service) at a major station between the city and terminus. This applies to off- peak Alamein and Williamstown trains, some Belgrave and Lilydale during evenings, Pakenham off-peak, and all Stony Point trains (Stony Point is the only metropolitan rail line not electrified, and runs a limited diesel service at irregular intervals). Most trains run through the city loop. Weekday morning trains into the city run through the loop first then to Flinders St, then to suburban destinations. Saturday, and weekday afternoon and evening trains into the city run direct to Flinders St, then around the loop and to suburban destinations. No loop trains run on Sundays (exceptions during Christmas shopping period). Allow 9 minutes extra time for trains running via the loop. - Tram: All peak services are two man (driver and conductor) crews. Some off-peak, most evening, and many weekend services are driver only.
