The VHST Project

Background

1998 - Speedrail

Articles about the project

The future

On 12th August 1998, the Department of Transport set up a taskforce to examine the feasability of more high speed rail lines.

UPDATE: To the dismay of the ACT and NSW governments, the Speedrail consortium and the business community, the Federal Government abandoned the VHST project on 12th December 2000. This won't be the last we hear of a fast train proposal, and there is still a lot of research to do on previous proposals. This site isn't going away. The Department of Transport and Regional Services has commissioned a scoping study into a broader Melbourne - Canberra - Sydney - Brisbane VHST.

UPDATE: On 23rd March 2002, DoTRS abandoned the VHST scoping study.
