Four dead, 20 still trapped in Blue Mountains train crash 
Four people are now reported to be dead in a train collision at the base of
the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

It is understood that at least 20 people are trapped and many people with
minor injuries have been removed from the Indian Pacific and the passenger
train.

Cityrail says the 6.39 passenger train from Lithgow appears to have collided
with the Indian Pacific near Glenbrook station. 

Ambulance service spokesman Bill Rossenrode says a major medical emergency
program is underway.

"It's confirmed that four people have been deceased, there is at least 25
injuries of varying magnitude and all the walking wounded are now currently
being evacuated from the two trains," he said.

"At the moment there's a full triage process going on, we've set up a
command post and everyone that is walking around is being marshalled into
these areas for head counts and clarification whether they were involved in
the accident or not."


Witness

It is understood at least four carriages have been derailed and the line is
blocked.

A nearby resident has told ABC Radio he heard the accident from his home,
which backs onto the train line.

"The leading car on the 8.17 from Glenbrook to the city has telescoped into
the rear car of the Indian Pacific," he said.

"The Indian Pacific, whether the accident has caused it or whether it caused
it before which brought it to a stop, is actually in two sections.

"Approximately half-way along the train, on the other side of the
roadbridge, you can see that there's a gap in the carriages of some 10-15
metres."

Great Southern Railways, the operators of the Indian Pacific service, have
advised that concerned members of the public who may have friends or
relatives n the train should call 13 21 47 for further information.
