ICE - Inter City Express

Queensland Rail introduced the ICE in 1988, for use on the North Coast Line between Brisbane and Rockhampton, a distance of approx. 600km. The ICE has reduced the journey time by five hours.

The train can be configured to run with 4 to 6 cars. Two power pairs can be accompanied by either one or two trailer cars. A power pair consists of two power cars with ABB thyristor drive equipment, one of which includes the driver's cab.

The stainless steel vehicles are based on the EMUs delivered for the Citytrain service. ABB supplied the electrical equipment and the company's local partner, Walkers, manufactured the mechanical parts, partly to ABB's design.

TRAINSPOTTING TIPS

Since the Tilt Train was introduced in 1998 the ICE only runs the Saturday 'Spirit of Capricorn' Service and also the evening Gympie North services and the morning return service to Brisbane.

A sure fire place to see it is at Roma Street before departure, Northgate and Caboolture Stations. To find out departure times check QROTI's TVM.
