One for the Road - now book out now

One for the Road

Once again I am delighted to be able to help a fellow train buff publicize a
book about the Queensland sugar cane tramway system.

I am pleased to announce the imminent publication of Andrew K. Robert’s
second self-published book, “One for the Road”. This follows on from his
earlier (1998) work “Wheels in Motion” an illustrated history of those 23
sugar mills in Australia which still use narrow gauge tram lines to haul
cane. “Wheels in Motion” went through two editions and sold around the
world.

The response to the first book was so strong, and it stimulated so many
people and organisations to dig out their old records and dredge up old
information, that Andrew realized that he had enough material for a second
book.

The new publication, “One for the Road” talks about the lines (maps),
scenery and the more positive events of day to day operations by 21 Mills
from Mossman to Nambour in Queensland.

Complimented by cartoons, it tells some funny and true stories from drivers,
pointspersons, traffic officers and navvies. For the crews that get along,
10 hour seem like 10 seconds. One driver described his team (he and his
fireman) as a “working partnership” and this is reflected in the stories
told.

The book contains 160 pages, 35 colour photographs – mostly one per A4 page,
55 black and white cartoons and 157 cartoons. There is also technical data
from many of the companies that built the narrow gauge locomotives used and
in use on the cane tramways in Queensland. Companies such Clyde
Engineering, EM Baldwin & Sons, Walkers Pty Ltd, Pleystowe Mill (first to
convert the NSWGR 73 Class from 4 foot 6 inch gauge to 2 foot 6 inch gauge)
with a lot of photographs that have never been seen before.

So if you are looking for an easy read, with plenty of laughs and technical
details, “One for the Road” is it.

Biographical Note:

At the time he published his first book, Andrew was working as a fireman on
a diesel locomotive based at Farleigh Sugar Mill. Since then he has passed
his driver’s examination and is now in the driver’s seat during the crushing
season. He owns and operates an extensive live steam (5inch gauge) system
at his home at North Eaton outside Mackay in Central Queensland and is an
active collector of railway memorabilia.
