QGR Ernest Junction tunnel site inspection

Tunnel on north / South Brisbane side of Ernest Junction which was a junction on the former QR line
to Southport / Tweed Heads. Southport line left the Tweed Heads line at Ernest Junction [46 m 40 c
ex South Brisbane] to terminate at Southport 50m 11 ch. Tweed Heads was 69miles 33 chains.

************* Site inspected last Saturday.

The western end tunnel mouth and cutting still clear of development. Thiess Constructions have a
private access road next to it for their Pacific Motorway contract.

Eastern tunnel mouth and Ernest Junction station yard area almost swamped with town houses and
factory development for the nearby Ernest Junction Industrial Estate. Station yard bulldozed beyond
recognition. In fact Marybeth Ct is built over the station yard.

I didn't go looking for the eastern tunnel mouth due to housing developments and privacy
considerations. It looks like people live there.

Track milage from ARHS [Q] book "Destination South Brisbane" by John Kerr and John Armstrong.

If visiting the area, please don't fall over the western tunnel mouth!

Cheers
