End of an era - BHP Newcastle

With the cessation of steelmaking at Newcastle last week, tomorrow marks the
end of the BHP operation of the company's internal railway. National Rail
is expected to take over the shunting of the remaining network that will
continue to
serve the rolling and wire mills. An 81 class (8124) had been trialed on the
private network at the start of this year.
The surviving BHP centre cab locos have been for sale for some months now.
A feature article on this subject - "Steelworks Sign-Off" appears in RD
October and includes a tabulation of the BHP loco fleet.
