RE: Standard Gauge



Read in a rail mag lately, maybe Network, that the standard guage is based on the Roman chariot wheel spacing.

Something to do with, thats the width the romans built there roads for, so the later horse and buggy in the UK had to be the same or risk bumpy rides and broken wheels. 

The first track system was a carrage running along timber tracks with no wheel flange only the track, which was on the outside. 

The rest is history.

But then somehow Australia ended up with more rail guages than the rest of the world combined.
