Certainly when I was a young Surveyor and did surveys in the Eastern
Suburbs there were many Survey Marks that were branded Railways
Dept (or something like that). I remeber one in Dover Heights, far removed
 from any existing construction.

The centre tracks at Nth Sydney Station were part of the proposed Northern
Beaches/Warringah Railway. One of the tunnels at least heads down under
the Up Shore line I think (in case anyone attacks me for incorrect info)

I always thought that the better solution for the Northern Beaches was to
use
the existing tunnelwork to head on over to Mosman instead of floating
untried
technologies along roadways.

And so I end my spiel, suitably chastened as to making unsubstantiated
comments.
But at least we get the answers eventually.
