   LOCAL NEWS : South Australia

Burke expects Adelaide-to-Darwin railway deal to close soon

The Northern Territory's Chief Minister, Denis Burke, has told
parliament he expects the closure of the deal for the
   Adelaide-to-Darwin railway before Christmas.
Mr Burke said the issue of further public funds will be addressed in
   the coming weeks.
He said claims by Labor in the Territory and South Australia that the
Federal Opposition leader, Kim Beazley, had promised $300 million to
   the project were wrong.
Mr Burke said Mr Beazley promised $100 million in the election
campaign last year and up tp a total of $300 million if required over
   the next few years.
The Chief Minister said no project in the world would be banked on
   that sort of commitment.
