SA and NT meets to discuss more funds for Adelaide-Darwin rail
Labor says Australia's intervention in East Timor underlines the need
for an Adelaide to Darwin rail link.
In Adelaide today, funding for the project was discussed by Northern
Territory chief minister Denis Burke and South Australian premier John
Olsen.
Mr Burke says the preferred bidder, the Asia-Pacific Consortium wants
a larger public subsidy, and the funding issue will have to be
addressed by the State, Territory and Commonwealth governments.
The three governments had previously pledged a combined total of $300
million from Territorial, South Australian, and Federal funds.
South Australia's Opposition leader, Mike Rann, says the extra funding
should come from the Commonwealth, in line with the extra $200 million
promised by the Federal Labor Opposition.
"The East Timor crisis as well as well as all of the economic benefits
should underline to the prime minister that it is in the national
interest to give extra money to support this project, rather than just
in the interests of South Australia and the Northern Territory," he
said.
Premier John Olsen says Labor's comments are unhelpful... because he
wants to conclude negotiations with the preferred bidder and minimise
the amount of taxpayers' money going into the railway.
The Northern Territory's Chief Minister Denis Burke says today's
meeting was constructive.
"There has always been additional monies required in the project and
now it is up to the three governments to decide how that could be
equitably shared," he said.
"Anyone in Opposition can promise anything."
Meanwhile, the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry is
hesitant about predicting when a start might be made on the
construction of the rail line.
Central Australia Regional Manager for the Chamber of Commerce, Beth
Mildred, says the question of a starting date depends on finance.
"Obviously a lot hangs on these discussions at the moment," she said.
"The feeling is that this will happen, it is a positive thing for the
territory and it needs to happen."
"I have absolutely no doubt at all that it will happen."
