That sounds like a pretty good description of an EL, and as AN put up some
advertising about the EL approach to High Speed Pass Trains, showing them
front and back of a modern high speed Indian Pacific, pretty close to the
original idea! But alas ....
I guess you saw two [ex] ANR  AN Class locos, now owned by National Rail
