Automatic electric staff was (and still is) extremely common in NSW.
Except for instruments at fairly major stations (which were never likely
to be unattended) or those with some special geographical features (e.g.
Tumulla) almost all instruments were at least equipped for automatic
working, so that they could be used even if a station was temporarily
unattended (sometimes even if the signaller was doing something else at
the time that a staff was being requested from the other end of the
section). Of course many electric staff stations were (and are)
permanently unattended.
