Tenders for the construction of the Alice Springs - Darwin railway close
today. Three consortia have made tenders. The frontrunner appears to be
Northlink, a consotrium of Theiss and the Commonwealth Bank.
The winning bid is expected to be announced within 3 months, with
construction to start at the end of the year. The first train to Darwin
should be in 2003.
