I don't think it was based on past ticket sales. They apparentely obtain postcodes from those who buy the tickets and work out from that where most of the people will be coming from. In this case it didn't seem to work. As you say it is still a learning experience for the organisers and I for one am confident they will have it pretty well right come September next year.
