Of course, 3'6" could easily have been the Australian "standard" gauge. IT
would also have been much easier to dual gauge the existing "standard" and
broad gauge track if necessary. Also no loading gauge problems. The only
possible problem might have been an inability to double stack.

You only need to look at what has been done in South Africa and Japan on
narrow gauge (and lately in Queensland) to see that it would not have held
us back.
