This is only one example in recent times which Hitachis were run in 3 car
configs. The last time i saw a 3 car Hitachi, besides the example below
was in about 1990.
My guess as to the main reason that Hitachi's are only run in 6 car
configs is that there are enough 3 car Comengs to make a complete fleet
during off peak and/or weekend periods. Comengs also feature Scharfenboug
couplers which are quicker and cleaner to couple/decouple than the
autocouplers featured on the Hitachis. This would mean a time saving
measure.
