I didn't think it was true, however, space would not be a problem between
the gauges the way it was done for triple gauge. The triple gauge consisted
of four rails. If you were to number the rails 1 to 4 from left right, the
gauges would be as follows :-

Rails 1 and 3 are broad gauge,
Rails 2 and 4 are standard gauge,
Rails 2 and 3 are narrow gauge.

The distance between rails 1 and 4 works out to be about 6' 5 1/2". Still
rather tight for double slips.
