Gradient. The line to/from Gunnedah has a ruling grade of 1 in 75. The
line to/from Binnaway has a ruling grade on 1 in 100 Comp. On the
Gunnedah line, approaching Werris Creek yard in uphill at 1 in 75
uncompensated on a 25 chain curve. On the Binnaway line it is 1 in 100
compensated.
The "I've Binnaway to Werris Creek" line was opened in 1925 or
thereabouts when the extra load hauling capacity would have outweighed
the reversal disadvantage.
In the 1980's the bit from Gap to Werris Creek South (Binnaway line)
was abandoned in favour of all trains using the other bit and Binnaway
trains using the crossover (which was rebuilt and signals added).
