Alice Springs rail bypass.

I have been able to secure a copy of the Consultants
report for the Alice Springs Town Council on routing
trains East of the Alice for the new Darwin line.
It makes for some very interesting reading even though
it has been rejected by the NT Government.

The one thing that stood out in this report was the
"option" of completely removing the railway from the
Town altogether even if the Alice to Darwin line does
not go ahead. Nothing new about this, in fact when
Australian National Railways were constructing the new
standard gauge line there was a concerted effort to
have the new line terminate South of the Town.

ANR being Commonwealth owned in a Commonwealth
Territory had sufficient clout to bounce this idea.

Can you imagine traveling one of the Worlds most famous
trains and terminating short of the destination only to
be bussed into town.!
