Geoff is on the right track:
The maximum number to depart from Melbourne on the one night was three, and
not until the early to mid 1970s (Thursday at the start of Easter).
Recorder reported this as four divisions arriving in Adelaide: three
overnight trains on Friday morning, and the Good Friday day train from
Melbourne arriving on Friday evening.
