Ride index is derived from a very complex algorithm. It is related to speed and
requires horizontal and vertical accelerations measured above the bogie centres
at each end of the car. When testing the XAM sleepers, they were getting ride
indexes of 3.2 at 180 km/h compared with 1.6 in the older XBR car. Many
modifications have taken place since then, resulting in much better (read: poor)
riding qualities.
