I've done a lot of German to English translations and it appears to work
reasonably well, apart from most of the highly technical words. It
dioesn't make "good" English, but it is readable. It appears to work best
on foreign language newspaper articles, but don't ask it to translate
anything by Goethe. 

The best way to check is to translate something into another language,
then translate it back into English.

If it's for commercial use, I'd pay for a professional human translator.
Altavista is very literal in its translations and doesn't necessarily
carry the intended meaning.
