In the first months of N.R. it was interesting to walk into the Dynon Depot,
and note one collar and Tie and a pretty Receptionist. NR's original blurb
was to run everything without middle management!
Middle management was absent for about two months but within two years, they
bred in all the dark little holes that couldn't be filled in or even found.
They took the place over. Its the way things are! The Drivers and Terminal
Staff were just too damn busy and anyway, senior management were always
pretty useless, but very powerful. It did not take them long to find many
reasons to create all those middle management types to make them selves look
a lot more important etc etc etc. thus
"National Rail in 1997-98 recorded an operating loss before income tax of
$20.4 million, compared with a $5.1 million loss in 1996-97."
