Whenever the subject of single-line working arises, I'm reminded of the
cartoon which appeared in one of the daily papers during an extended train
strike in Sydney, in the 1970s, I think. It showed two (steam) trains
approaching each other on a single line, driven by businessmen in collars
and ties, with one of the "drivers" exclaiming "Strewth! Someone else
managed to get one started!"
(I think it's in my files somewhere.)
